Opuntia kleiniae (Cylindropuntia)

Opuntia kleiniae ranges from (rarely) western Kansas to west Texas, and eastern New Mexico. The plant is also found across northern Mexico. Hybrids between O. kleiniae and O. leptocaulis have been reported; these latter may be known as Cylindropuntia x antoniae. Earlier names may have included Opuntia wrightii and Opuntia recondita.

A technical discussion of O. kleiniae may be found in the Flora of North America online. Some authorities treat O. kleiniae var. tetracantha as a hybrid species (O. x tetracantha). A particularly nice close-up photo of O. kleiniae in fruit may be found on the Chihuahuan Desert Plants Web page.
