The Flora of North America reports, "Flowering spring (Mar-May). Sonoran Desert, flats, hills, sandy to rocky soils; 400-700 m; Calif.; Mexico (Baja California)."

O. munzii (Clyindropuntia munzii) is a desert plant that often grows in association with Creosote bush scrub.
