Ariocarpus agavoides

Ariocarpus agavoides in bud

Ariocarpus agavoides hails from a few locations in Mexico; it was originally described from specimens found near the city of Tula in Tamualipas state. The species is now known to occur in San Luis Potosoi as well. The plants are small and difficult to find unless in bloom. There are about 5-6 species of Ariocarpus, and A. agavoides may be the easiest to grow (as grafted plants). As with many cacti, A. agavoides is threatened by urban growth, agriculture, and collecting.

The species grows in limestone soils, sometimes forming colonies of 6-12 plants per square yard. You may read more about the species here (use Babel Fish to translate).
