Introduction
Opuntia lubrica Griffiths is considered by some authorities to be synonymous with O. microdasys subsp. rufida. U. Guzman & Mandujano. However, the purple color of the cladodes and other considerations suggest that it is separate and distinct from O. microdasys subsp. rufida.
One proposed idea is that O. lubrica is not a native species in the USA; rather it is a hybrid derived from O. microdasys and O. ficus-indica.
