That change reflects evidence that the \u201chedgehog\u201d and \u201ctorch\u201d types intergrade more than old books suggested. For everyday use, this means plants labeled <em data-start=\"418\" data-end=\"441\">Trichocereus pachanoi<\/em>, <em data-start=\"443\" data-end=\"458\">T. peruvianus<\/em>, or <em data-start=\"463\" data-end=\"477\">T. bridgesii<\/em> are correctly <em data-start=\"492\" data-end=\"513\">Echinopsis pachanoi<\/em>, <em data-start=\"515\" data-end=\"529\">E. peruviana<\/em>, and <em data-start=\"535\" data-end=\"552\">E. lageniformis<\/em>\u2014and so on.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"565\" data-end=\"583\">Why the change<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"585\" data-end=\"908\">Earlier authors split \u201cglobose <em data-start=\"616\" data-end=\"628\">Echinopsis<\/em>\u201d from \u201ccolumnar <em data-start=\"645\" data-end=\"659\">Trichocereus<\/em>\u201d based on form, ribbing, and flowers. However, broader comparisons showed those characters overlap, and many species are closely allied. Bringing the columnar species into <em data-start=\"832\" data-end=\"844\">Echinopsis<\/em> keeps related plants together and avoids artificial boundaries.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"910\" data-end=\"951\">What \u201c<em data-start=\"920\" data-end=\"934\">Trichocereus<\/em>\u201d still tells you<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"953\" data-end=\"1060\">Although <em data-start=\"962\" data-end=\"976\">Trichocereus<\/em> is no longer the accepted genus, the word remains useful shorthand in horticulture:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1062\" data-end=\"1364\">\n<li data-start=\"1062\" data-end=\"1134\">\n<p data-start=\"1064\" data-end=\"1134\">It points to the <strong data-start=\"1081\" data-end=\"1107\">columnar, tree-forming<\/strong> members of <em data-start=\"1119\" data-end=\"1131\">Echinopsis<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1135\" data-end=\"1245\">\n<p data-start=\"1137\" data-end=\"1245\">It hints at <strong data-start=\"1149\" data-end=\"1198\">large, often nocturnal, white to pale flowers<\/strong> with strong tubes and heavy floral bristles.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1246\" data-end=\"1364\">\n<p data-start=\"1248\" data-end=\"1364\">It reminds growers that these are <strong data-start=\"1282\" data-end=\"1316\">fast, hardy, high-light plants<\/strong> compared with many small, globose <em data-start=\"1351\" data-end=\"1363\">Echinopsis<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1366\" data-end=\"1508\">Because the trade, older labels, and many websites still use <em data-start=\"1427\" data-end=\"1441\">Trichocereus<\/em>, keeping both names in mind helps with searches and plant records.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"1510\" data-end=\"1532\">Practical labeling<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"1534\" data-end=\"1600\">For tags, articles, and databases, a simple compromise works well:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1602\" data-end=\"1745\">\n<li data-start=\"1602\" data-end=\"1656\">\n<p data-start=\"1604\" data-end=\"1656\">Use the accepted name first: <em data-start=\"1633\" data-end=\"1654\">Echinopsis pachanoi<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1657\" data-end=\"1745\">\n<p data-start=\"1659\" data-end=\"1745\">Optionally add the legacy name in parentheses for clarity: (<em data-start=\"1719\" data-end=\"1742\">Trichocereus pachanoi<\/em>)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1747\" data-end=\"1884\">That approach respects current taxonomy while staying readable for gardeners and collectors who learned the plants under the older genus.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"1886\" data-end=\"1901\">Final notes<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"1903\" data-end=\"2198\">Names change as we learn more. In this case, <em data-start=\"1948\" data-end=\"1960\">Echinopsis<\/em> simply covers a wider, more natural group that includes the familiar torch cacti.
