Introduction<\/h2>\n

Stenocereus thurberi<\/em>\u2014the organ pipe cactus\u2014is a multi-stemmed columnar cactus native to the Sonoran Desert of northwestern Mexico and southern Arizona. It forms clusters of tall, upright stems rising from a short basal trunk.<\/p>\n

The Details<\/h3>\n

Plants often reach several meters tall, with many narrow ribs and short, stout spines. Flower buds form high on the stems. The large, white, tubular flowers open at night and are fragrant; they remain open into the morning and close by midday.<\/p>\n

Pollination is primarily by night-flying visitors. Lesser long-nosed bats are the key pollinators across much of the range, with moths and, in the morning, bees and birds making secondary visits. Summer fruits (pitayas) are red outside with sweet, juicy pulp and many small seeds; birds, bats, and other animals eat the fruit and disperse the seeds.<\/p>\n

In habitat, organ pipe cactus grows on warm, rocky slopes and bajadas with excellent drainage. Seedlings often establish near or under shrubs and other nurse plants that provide shade and protection during early growth. The species is relatively frost-sensitive compared to some other columnar cacti, which helps explain its distribution.<\/p>\n
