In cacti\u2014especially in the Opuntioideae\u2014its effects on germination are mixed. Some species show little benefit, and very high doses can even restrict germination.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"304\" data-end=\"319\">The Details<\/h3>\n<h4 data-start=\"321\" data-end=\"341\">What was tested<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"342\" data-end=\"601\">GA was evaluated in five Opuntioideae: <em data-start=\"381\" data-end=\"407\">Cylindropuntia imbricata<\/em>, <em data-start=\"409\" data-end=\"425\">C. leptocaulis<\/em>, <em data-start=\"427\" data-end=\"445\">Opuntia rastrera<\/em>, <em data-start=\"447\" data-end=\"462\">O. microdasys<\/em>, and <em data-start=\"468\" data-end=\"484\">O. macrocentra<\/em>. Seeds were tried at several GA levels (for example, 500, 1,000, and 1,500 ppm) to see whether germination improved.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"603\" data-end=\"621\">Main findings<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"622\" data-end=\"907\">Responses were species-dependent and rarely better than untreated controls. At the highest level tested (1,500 ppm), GA tended to restrict germination. In one case, a lower dose produced a modest increase, but overall there was no consistent advantage to using GA across these species.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"909\" data-end=\"927\">Light matters<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"928\" data-end=\"1184\">All five species germinated better with light. For <em data-start=\"979\" data-end=\"995\">O. macrocentra<\/em>, light was required, and GA could not substitute for it. This is a practical point for growers: provide bright conditions for germination rather than trying to \u201cforce\u201d seeds with hormones.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"1186\" data-end=\"1212\">Dormancy and seed age<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"1213\" data-end=\"1494\">The seeds did not appear to have hard, physical dormancy. Instead, they likely have a mild physiological dormancy that eases with dry storage (\u201cafterripening\u201d). In other words, properly stored seeds can remain viable for years and may germinate better after some time on the shelf.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"1496\" data-end=\"1520\">Practical takeaways<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"1521\" data-end=\"1778\">If you are sowing opuntioid seeds, focus on even warmth, light, and patience. Use a clean medium, keep it just moist, and give seeds time\u2014especially if they are freshly harvested.
