Dr. J. P. Smith published an annotated checklist of the plants of Oklahoma. He wrote, \u201cMy purpose is to provide a reasonably complete and up-to-date list of the vascular plants known to occur in Oklahoma.\u201d He says \u201creasonably\u201d because a few plants may have been missed, but he was very thorough.<\/p>\n

The list is \u201cannotated\u201d because he recorded the status of each plant: N = native, E = endemic, I = introduced (naturalized); A = annual, P = perennial, S = shrub, SS = subshrub, T = tree, and V = vine. There are well over 2,000 plants listed, and each record was verified. However, his treatment of Opuntia<\/em> likely needs an update.<\/p>\n

His report is long and interesting. He documented numerous families, including about 20 species and subspecies of cacti.<\/p>\n
