Botanically, many of the best-known succulent species once placed in <em data-start=\"214\" data-end=\"223\">Senecio<\/em> have been reassigned to close relatives\u2014especially <strong data-start=\"275\" data-end=\"284\">Curio<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"286\" data-end=\"297\">Kleinia<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"299\" data-end=\"310\">Caputia<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"316\" data-end=\"333\">Dendrosenecio<\/strong>\u2014yet horticulture still uses the old <em data-start=\"370\" data-end=\"379\">Senecio<\/em> names. In practice, databases and plant tags often list both, treating the newer combinations as <strong data-start=\"477\" data-end=\"506\">synonymous with <em data-start=\"495\" data-end=\"504\">Senecio<\/em><\/strong>. Note that <em data-start=\"518\" data-end=\"527\">Senecio<\/em> sensu stricto also includes many non-succulent daisies and herbs; the \u201csucculent senecios\u201d are a subset representing convergent adaptations to arid or seasonal dryness.<\/p>\n<h1 data-start=\"698\" data-end=\"711\">The Details<\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"713\" data-end=\"817\"><strong data-start=\"713\" data-end=\"738\">How to read the names<\/strong><br data-start=\"738\" data-end=\"741\" \/>Current names are shown first, followed by common <em data-start=\"791\" data-end=\"800\">Senecio<\/em> synonyms (syn.).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"819\" data-end=\"867\"><strong data-start=\"819\" data-end=\"865\">Trailing \/ \u201cstring\u201d types (mostly <em data-start=\"855\" data-end=\"862\">Curio<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"868\" data-end=\"1374\">\n<li data-start=\"868\" data-end=\"982\">\n<p data-start=\"870\" data-end=\"982\"><em data-start=\"870\" data-end=\"888\">Curio rowleyanus<\/em> (syn. <em data-start=\"895\" data-end=\"915\">Senecio rowleyanus<\/em>) \u2014 string of pearls: spherical leaves with a translucent window.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"983\" data-end=\"1073\">\n<p data-start=\"985\" data-end=\"1073\"><em data-start=\"985\" data-end=\"1001\">Curio radicans<\/em> (syn. <em data-start=\"1008\" data-end=\"1021\">S. radicans<\/em>) \u2014 string of bananas: curved, banana-like leaves.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1074\" data-end=\"1175\">\n<p data-start=\"1076\" data-end=\"1175\"><em data-start=\"1076\" data-end=\"1093\">Curio herreanus<\/em> (syn. <em data-start=\"1100\" data-end=\"1115\">S. herreianus<\/em>) \u2014 string of tears: elongated beads with a window\/stripe.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1176\" data-end=\"1295\">\n<p data-start=\"1178\" data-end=\"1295\"><em data-start=\"1178\" data-end=\"1197\">Curio articulatus<\/em> (syn. <em data-start=\"1204\" data-end=\"1220\">S. articulatus<\/em>) \u2014 candle\/hot-dog plant: segmented, glaucous cylinders; By contrast, many <em data-start=\"2600\" data-end=\"2609\">Senecio<\/em> species are non-succulent herbs or shrubs; \u201csucculent senecios\u201d refers specifically to the water-storing clades above.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2730\" data-end=\"3080\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><strong data-start=\"2730\" data-end=\"2767\">Naming note (synonymy you\u2019ll see)<\/strong><br data-start=\"2767\" data-end=\"2770\" \/>Expect dual labeling across books, tags, and databases: accepted names may be <em data-start=\"2848\" data-end=\"2855\">Curio<\/em>, <em data-start=\"2857\" data-end=\"2866\">Kleinia<\/em>, <em data-start=\"2868\" data-end=\"2877\">Caputia<\/em>, or <em data-start=\"2882\" data-end=\"2897\">Dendrosenecio<\/em>, while the older <strong data-start=\"2915\" data-end=\"2930\"><em data-start=\"2917\" data-end=\"2928\">Senecio<\/em><\/strong> names are widely retained and treated as <strong data-start=\"2972\" data-end=\"2984\">synonyms<\/strong>.
