Echinocereus/Wilcoxia polsergi

Echinocereus polsergi has had multiple names over the years. I first learned about this species as Wilcoxia polsergi; it has been referred to as Cereus tuberosa, W. tuberosa, E. tamaulipensis, and other names. I don’t know which name is used now.

Echinocereus poselgeri

Echinocereus poselgeri in South Texas a day too late for perfect blooms

Normally, the long think stems blend into the background and the plant is overseen. When you find it, it is almost always because of its large magenta blooms—and it is as though they are dancing in the air because the stem is slender.  It is startling to come across this plant growing along barbed wire fences or under mesquite.

The plant grows from cuttings easily enough, and seed as well. It has an inordinately large tuber and should not be dug from the wild—there are few enough plants in the wild of South Texas.
