Introduction
Dr. J. P. Smith published an annotated checklist of the plants of Oklahoma. He wrote, “My purpose is to provide a reasonably complete and up-to-date list of the vascular plants known to occur in Oklahoma.” He says “reasonably” because a few plants may have been missed, but he was very thorough.
Details
The list is “annotated” because he recorded the status of each plant: N = native, E = endemic, I = introduced (naturalized); A = annual, P = perennial, S = shrub, SS = subshrub, T = tree, and V = vine. There are well over 2,000 plants listed, and each record was verified. However, his treatment of Opuntia likely needs an update.
His report is long and interesting. He documented numerous families, including about 20 species and subspecies of cacti.
