Introduction

Delosperma nubigenum is native to South Africa, but it is amazingly hardy in North America, provided it  is grown in very well-drained soil. It is not especially heat tolerant because it comes from a high altitude, but it will survive in USDA climate zone 5.

The Details

D. nubigenum forms a low mat of succulent, evergreen leaves, bearing many, small yellow flowers in late spring. It is a great choice for hot, dry areas with good drainage. It is excellent as a groundcover, in the rock garden or wall, for edging, and especially as a lawn substitute. It is easily propagated by breaking off short pieces and simply sticking them into the ground; new roots form quickly.

The foliage of D. nubigenum will turn bronze in cold weather and it is deer resistant. It is attractive to butterflies too.
