Introduction
The 3 1/2 dozen Aeonium species are found in Africa and the Canary Islands. The Canary Islands hosts most of the species.
The Details
As might be expected from the mild climate of the Canary Islands, Aeonium species are frost sensitive. However, the cultivated species and forms make exceptionally easy-to-grow pot plants that can be beautiful.
Though related to Sempervivum and Orostachys, the physical shape of Aeonium can be decidedly different from that of those two genera. The flowers are similar in overall architecture.
Aeonium plants prefer good drainage as do most succulents, but regular moisture is welcome for garden forms. While they prefer a sunny location they are not the best plants for hot, dry deserts. If they are grown in cold climates, they must be brought indoors for the winter.
